A poorly recorded or poorly edited video doesn't just fail to grab attention: it can work against you. Scouts watch dozens of these videos every week, and most don't communicate what the player can actually do. Preparing a video that represents you well requires technical and content decisions that go far beyond filming a few goals.

What to Film: Content Before Spectacle

The most common mistake is thinking a scout video should be a highlight reel with epic music. In reality, scouts need to see how you play in real context: how you move without the ball, how you make decisions under pressure, how you get out of difficult situations.

Include full matches or long clips (8-10 minutes minimum). The goals and spectacular plays take up 20-30 seconds of that total; the rest should show your game-reading ability, positioning, short passing technique, and consistency. A scout looks for patterns, not isolated moments.

If you play multiple positions, make it clear where you were filmed. A right fullback recorded on the right flank communicates more than the same player wandering all over the field. Specificity matters.

Camera Angles and Technical Quality

You need at least two angles. The front angle (facing the sideline, at field height) is the standard: it shows the width of play well, lateral movements, and passing depth. A high side angle (from behind the goal) adds perspective and helps see defensive or offensive positioning as a whole.

The minimum viable resolution today is 720p (HD), though 1080p is what most professional or semi-professional clubs expect. If you only have access to a mobile phone, that's fine; what matters is that the image is stable. Avoid filming vertically or with constant zoom that loses perspective.

The audio doesn't need to be perfect, but avoid having the camera so far away that you only hear unintelligible ambient noise. Scouts understand it's amateur football; it's not a problem if you hear the field or people, just that it's not a permanent distraction.

Editing: Order and Clarity

Basic editing is enough. You don't need special effects or elaborate transitions. What you do need:

Clear separation of sequences: if you include multiple matches or dates, mark where one ends and another begins (simple text: 'Match 5, 2024').
Information at the beginning: full name, position, age, current club (if applicable). Maximum three lines of text.
Consistent audio: keep the volume even. Background music, if you use it, should not drown out the sound of the match.

Music is not mandatory. Many scouts prefer to listen to the match without embellishments. If you add it, use something neutral and low-volume—something sporting that doesn't demand attention. Avoid hip-hop, reggaeton, or any genre that is too distinctive; the video is professional, not a personal clip.

Total duration should be between 5 and 12 minutes. Shorter than that and scouts see little of your play; longer and they lose patience, even if there's good content. If you have exceptional material, make two videos: one of 7 minutes with the best and another complete one for whoever wants more detail.

Where and How to Share It

An excellent video that nobody sees is useless. You need to put it where scouts actually look: specialized sports platforms, not just YouTube.

Background instead of field: if the camera is so far away that you see more empty grass than players, it doesn't work.
Plays where you're not visible: if you had to include team goals where you barely participated to pad the video, that shows and is counterproductive.

Checklist Before Sharing

Before sending your video to a scout:

Is it clearly understood who you are (name and position visible)?
Is the image stable and clear for most of the video?
Does the content show your position and real playing style, not isolated plays?
Is there at least 5-6 minutes of continuous or almost continuous play?
Is it from a recent date (maximum 6-8 months)?

If you answer yes to these questions, the video is ready. It's not about cinema production; it's about the scout seeing what they need to see.
